About Better Ballots

Project Lead: Rob Newman

Board Executive: Tamara Balan, Katelyn Margerm, Dave Meslin

Toronto seems ready to embark on a journey of electoral evaluation. The shortcomings of our local elections have been clearly labeled and lamented by politicians, prominent leaders and the media. What’s lacking is a facilitated dialogue that explores possible solutions.

Better Ballots aims to create a public discussion about options for voting reform in Toronto. Using a variety of methods, including public forums and social networking, we will attempt to engage as many citizens and stakeholders as possible in a dialogue that explores the problems we are facing as well as the benefits and drawbacks that come with each proposed solution.

We'll be hosting four Town Hall meetings across Toronto in April 2010, exploring fourteen options for voting reform. We will also provide materials and speakers to groups who want to host their own local info sessions. (sign up for updates here.)

Better Ballots is being undertaken by a working group of members of the Emerging Leaders Network (ELN), an initiative of the Toronto City Summit Alliance.

The Emerging Leaders Network is a group of civic leaders from across the GTA whose energy, insights and leadership enable them to benefit from and contribute to the project that is Toronto. Members of the ELN are people who mobilize action, laying the groundwork for the city of tomorrow.

Members of the Better Ballots working group are acting as independent citizens, not as agents of the Toronto City Summit Alliance.
